A while back, my dear friend Hayley found out I was going to be selling my quilts and pillows. She told me she would like to order a pillow for her mom, Trish, as a Christmas gift.
A few weeks later I opened up shop.
As soon as I announced my new quilt shop on facebook and instagram, Trish contacted me about wanting to order two world pillows: one for herself, and one as a gift.
I was suddenly faced with a conflict (of epic proportion, obviously). Do I try to distract Trish from ordering a pillow for herself? And if so, how?
I got ahold of Hayley, and we decided to use this to our advantage. Opportunists. See, Trish had asked for specific colors; she wanted a blueish pillow for the gift, and a mustard/grey pillow for herself. As luck would have it, there was already a bluish pillow in the shop, which I directed Trish’s attention toward. Then I lied. That’s right. I lied to a paying customer, and even worse, my good friend’s mother, who I love and respect.
I told her I had other custom orders ahead of hers, and that I couldn’t guarantee her own pillow by Christmas. It was partly true.
Christmas morning, I got a text message with this photo attached saying “great minds think alike”. They had given each other the same gift, but in unique colors… how sweet is that?!
